A very important aspect of the Common Core is that it encourages the student to be able to read critically. The student must be able to do so in order to be able to draw out the inferences and subtle ideas contained within a given text. Simply reading what is written on the page is not enough. The student must be able to show understanding of the message that the author is trying to impart, and then show why this is so using the text itself to prove that the idea is valid. This can be very difficult for an educator to explain but there are ways to help this process. One way to help students to develop this skill is to have them ask questions. This allows the student to analyze their understanding of what the author intends. The following video gives some basic information about what close reading is and suggests some strategies toward teaching this skill.
One of the ideas presented in this video is that a key part of developing reading skills is interest. the instructor remarked that his students had submitted to his lesson, rather than engaged in it. this will be a major challenge for educators. in order to have the student engage the text, they must be able to see something that interests or challenges them enough to make them curious yet not so much that they feel overwhelmed. in this, I disagree with the idea of not prepping the students a little. I think that by giving a vague summary of the text, or by asking a couple of questions about the text before reading, the student is more engaged by the text. However this is only my opinion, what do you think?
